Indian Cashew Industry is lobbying for imports of raw cashewnuts from Vietnam. Traditionally, raw cashew nut was processed manually in India, while it is automated in Vietnam where the processing costs are lower in Vietnam. The mechanised units process 80 kg cashew for ?1,300-1,500 while manual units do it at ?3,000-4,000. The industry is seeking to promote mechanisation by extending soft loans that will help in scaling up production and open more job opportunities. There is also demand for raw cashewnuts as India imports of over 900,000 tonnes to overcome shortage.
