FSSAI, the authority of food standards in India has clarified the process of irradiation in food processing in India. Irradiation is a process by which pre-packed foods or bulk foods are exposed to gamma radiation to achieve the desired objective. The authority has provided detailed information on irradiation technology and its benefits.
Currently, foods processed by irradiation is certified with logo ‘Radura’ as per FSSAI. Across the globe, over 60 countries irradiation of food is permitted and its practice is increasing every year. It is widely practiced in China, followed by USA.
