GCMMF was founded in 1946 to stop the exploitation by middlemen. A co-operative, the Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Ltd. began with just two village dairy co-operative societies and 247 litres of milk and is today better known as Amul Dairy. Amul grew from strength to strength thanks to the inspired leadership of Tribhuvandas Patel, the founder Chairman and the committed professionalism of Dr. Verghese Kurien, who was entrusted the task of running the dairy from 1950.
In January 2018, Amul has invested ?300 crore to upgrade its chocolate facility at Mogar on National Highway-8 from 200 tonnes per month to 1000 tonnes with an excess room for doubling the capacity . In September 2018, the company is venturing into frozen food sector of potato-based and paneer-based foods. The production is outsourced to a factory in North Gujarat but the co-operative will have tight controls and provide ingredients. The company has launched six varieties in the frozen potato snacks category, including aloo tikki, french fries, potato wedges and veggie stix, among others.
