Central government has levied a import duty rate of 40% on whey powder. It has been increased from earlier 30% to 40% now. Currently, dairy product imports are restricted in India. However, since pharma grade imports is not restricted, some players resort to import whey powder under the pharma grade. Around 1500 tonnes of whey powder is imported every month. The demand for whey powder is growing due to increasing health consciousness and general awareness about fitness. The overall market size of the milk-based protein is estimated at around ?10,000 crore.
