BTCPL manages two tea estates in Binaguri and Moraghat (both in West Bengal) with a combined plantation area of more than 1000 hectares. BTCPL produces black crush, tear, and curl (CTC) tea, with annual production capacity of 3 million kilograms (kg). It sells its unbranded tea through auctions, mainly to traders, who sell it to fast-moving consumer good (FMCG) companies. BTCPL does not manufacture green tea.
In 2008, BTCPL set up two windmills in Tamil Nadu, with capacity of 3 megawatts (MW) each, in order to avail of tax benefits from accelerated depreciation – this is because tax exemption for tea estates was discontinued in 2008. The company sells power produced by its windmills to Tamil Nadu State Electricity Board (TNEB).
