About the Company :

Incorporated in 1991, Metro Dairy Ltd is involved with the processing and marketing of milk and ice-cream/ frozen dessert with capacities of 4.0 lakh litre per day (LLPD) of milk (3 LLPD for pouch milk and 1 LLPD for loose milk) and 30 kilo litre per day (KLPD) of ice-cream/ frozen dessert. The manufacturing facilities of the company are located at Barasat and Malda in West Bengal. MDL processes four types of milk –toned milk, double-toned milk, cow milk and standardised milk and sells them under the brand name of “Milk”, “Diet”, “Go” and “Rich”, respectively. Ice-cream/ frozen dessert is sold under the brand name of “Metro – The Dairy Ice-cream”

MDL is a joint sector company, promoted by the West Bengal Co-operative Milk Producers’ Federation Limited (WBCMPFL), an apex co-operative body of milk farmers, Keventer Agro Limited (KAL), which processes agro-based products, and National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), an internationally-acclaimed dairy institution. The company has set up its processing facility under the Operation Flood Programme –Phase III, funded by the World Bank. After stabilisation of MDL’s operations, NDDB sold its entire stake to ICICI Bank Limited in March 2001.

This stake is now held by KAL. At present, KAL and WBCMPFL hold around 53% and 47% stakes in MDL, respectively, making MDL a subsidiary company of KAL.
