Geographical Indication (GI) tag has been to five varieties of Indian coffee cultivated in five regions. It includes Coorg Arabica, Chikmaglur Arabica and Bababudangiris Arabica coffee from Karnataka, Robusta coffee from Kerala, Araku Valley Arabica from Andhra Pradesh. The recognition has been granted through Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Some of the coffee beans are planted by tribals with traditional methods which has unique flavour and fermentation process. GI certification will allow the coffee producers of India to invest in maintaining the specific qualities of the coffee grown in that particular region.
