Konkan Mango famous for it s Alphonso variety gets the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. With this, Alphonso from Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Palghar, Thane and Raigad districts of Maharashtra, can now claim the place of origin of this mango type – Konkan. However – the region of South Gujarat too produces Alphonso mango. Further there are varieties of Alphonso mango like ‘Devgad Alphonso’ and ‘Ratnagiri Alphonso.’
There remains a need to have separate varieties instead of Konkan Alphonso. However, there has to be an awareness programme to protect is variety. Now efforts are on to have similar GI tag for Nagpur Orange and Nashik Grapes.
