Gujarat the largest producer of groundnut in India is looking up to the centre to set up a Peanut Promotion Council on par with other oil seeds. Currently, all oil meals except groundnut meal have export incentives. Besides overall the production in groundnuts have fallen from 32.0 lakh tonnes in 2017-18 to 27.0 lakh tonnes in 2018-19 (expected).
With lack of promotion, the price of groundnut have fallen and the state government implemented price support scheme (PSS) and so far has procured over 3 lakh tonnes of groundnut at MSP. However, a dedicated promotion council will go a long way to improve the crop !
