India and Australia have signed an agreement to allow market access of Australian walnuts in Indian market. Initially, 10 trial shipments of Australian walnuts will be sent to India before the trade doors officially open. Currently, India is a large market for Australian almonds and there is huge potential for their other nuts. It may be noted that, Australia also exports blue berries. The export value for Australia’s agricultural commodities to India has risen by 329 per cent since 2013, and were worth 2.6 billion dollars in 2017.
The clearance to import Australian walnuts have been granted after scientists from two countries agree on procedures to stop any threat of diseases or pests.
