Indian Sugar Industry is the second largest in the world. It produces 25 to 32 million tonnes of sugar every year depends on rainfall and other factors. To overcome the seasonal shock, Central Government is planning to create a buffer stock of 3.0 million tonnes of sugar to help sugar mills to overcome the crisis of over production. The sugar mills are quite relieved as it will relieve them of the cost of holding, infrastructure, insurance and interest costs. The union government is also considering an incentive of Rs. 7.7 for every kg of sugar export to alleviate low global sugar prices.
Domestic Sugar demand is also growing at a CAGR of 3% every year, which is likely to reach a stage of demand exceeding supply. Further there is a rising demand of bioethanol, which the government wants to promote to bring down its costly crude imports.
